Wanna Wac Em Win 2009 Champions League!

Wanna Wac Em win 2009 Champions League!

Wanna Wac Em from the Forbes Golf Club in regional NSW has won the inagural Sevens Golf Champions League after an impressive 92-80 victory over Goonawarra Golf Club entry, Shafted.  Both teams were wildcard entries into the Champions League, gaining entry on their strong performances from last summer which saw Shafted finish the season as the number 1 ranked side in Australia without winning their local title.  Wanna Wac Em have been clearly the best side over the past five weeks and were favourites heading into the final with previous total scores of 86, 84, 97 and 81.  As their handicaps plummeted the side found themselves striving to play better and better, which they ultimately acheived in scoring 92 points in the final to defeat Shafted who scored an otherwise excellent score of 80 points.

We contacted Forbes Golf Club during the week to find out more about the team that is the talk of the Sevens Golf Champions League:

"A brief profile on Wanna Wac Em players who all started with a handicap of 45 and above, have only been playing since the start of last years sevens competition.

Libby Godden (pic far left) is the team captain and plays off 28. Libby took out last year’s seven’s Most Games Played with 60 plus. Motivator of the team and inspiration to all beginner golfers.

Jennifer Horan (pic 2nd from left) who plays off 17 is the current form player of the team. Jennifer has won all the trophies before the handicapper got her. She is the 2009 Division II Club Champion runner-up and current winner of the Medal of Medallists.

Jayne Norrie (pic 3rd from left) who plays off 52 is the replacement team member for Dianne Haydon who performed creditably last year. The Paytens Bridge rookie has been practising in the paddock and behind her husband’s back. The secret weapon of the team.

Beth Dickens (pic 4th from left) who plays off 23 is Division III Club Champion for 2009. Beth gives the ball ‘a ride’ but not sure where it is going to finish up. The team talker always encouraging other team members.

Jodie Caine (3rd from right) who plays off 40 is in her second season with the Wac Ems. Look out because when she connects it goes out of sight. Jodie is the quieter member of the team that likes to play through the week.

Kathy Collits (pic 2nd from right) who plays off 27 is the Division III Club Champion runner-up 2009 to her sister Beth. Loves the game of golf and especially playing in the Wanna Wac Em team. Enjoys rubbing the success of the team into her husband Mark.

Pat Howarth (pic far right)who plays off 28 is the big improver of the team. With a new set of clubs and determination she has lowered her handicap and improved her game over recent months.

The Forbes Club are very proud of all the girls and their achievements."

It has been fantastic to see such an enthusiastic group of players, firstly to take up the sport through Sevens Golf, then to become members of the Forbes Golf Club and go on to win Club Championships, and finally to take out the most coveted title of all, the Sevens Golf Champions League Belt!

Well done to the girls from Wanna Wac Em, and congratulations and thanks to all the teams that qualified and competed for the inaugural Champions League Belt, you should all be proud to say that you were one of the best Sevens Golf teams in Australia.  Good Luck to all teams again this year, and remember to enjoy the game first, everything else is secondary.
